What is a EPUB file?

The .EPUB file extension refers to one of the most popular ebook file formats. The .EPUB files are currently widely used on the internet for publishing and distribution of proprietary material and ebook licensing. The .EPUB format has emerged as the single largest competitor to the famous .pdf file format.

.Epub stands for electronic publishing. The file format is specifically designed for book reading purposes. It is licensed as open source and this is gaining wide popularity currently across the globe. It allows the publishers to include the feature of a responsive layout, meaning which the text adjusts itself according to the screen size of the reading device.

More information about EPUB file

EPUB (Electronic Publication) file extension is used by ebooks – electronic books. EPUB file is basically an archive file composed of a ZIP archive storing ebook’s content and XML file describing contents of the ZIP file. EPUB archive can store various type of data, for example, images, table of contents, words, fonts, style templates, metadata, etc.

EPUB is an open standard for book publishing; it uses XML language and some elements of HTML markup language. EPUB is the successor to older Open eBook format. EPUB is currently the most popular ebook file format and is widely supported by most ebook readers currently on the market.

Universality of EPUB format

EPUB files can be viewed on various devices (smartphones, tablets, ebook readers, computers) as EPUB is a reflowable format, which means that the document adapts to the output screen. Text and images are scaled for optimum space usage.

Three standards EPUB is based on

EPUB format is based on three standards proposed by International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF):

  1. Open Publication Structure (OPS) – defines semantics and requirements related to document compatibility. Documents define the use of XHTML, SVG, and CSS.
  2. Open Packaging Format (OPF) – describes structure of stored information, including metadata (author, publisher, title), manifest file, and table of contents.
  3. Open Container Format (OCF) – describes how the contents of the file are archived.

How to open EPUB files

If you cannot open the EPUB file on your computer - there may be several reasons. The first and most important reason (the most common) is the lack of a suitable software that supports EPUB among those that are installed on your device.

A very simple way to solve this problem is to find and download the appropriate application. The first part of the task has already been done – the software supporting the EPUB file can be found in the table. Now just download and install the appropriate application.

Possible problems with the EPUB format files

The inability to open and operate the EPUB file does not necessarily mean that you do not have an appropriate software installed on your computer. There may be other problems that also block our ability to operate the Open Publication Structure EBook Format file. Below is a list of possible problems.

  • Corruption of a EPUB file which is being opened
  • Incorrect links to the EPUB file in registry entries.
  • Accidental deletion of the description of the EPUB from the Windows registry
  • Incomplete installation of an application that supports the EPUB format
  • The EPUB file which is being opened is infected with an undesirable malware.
  • The computer does not have enough hardware resources to cope with the opening of the EPUB file.
  • Drivers of equipment used by the computer to open a EPUB file are out of date.

If you are sure that all of these reasons do not exist in your case (or have already been eliminated), the EPUB file should operate with your programs without any problem. If the problem with the EPUB file has not been solved, it may be due to the fact that in this case there is also another rare problem with the EPUB file. In this case, the only you can do is to ask for assistance of a professional staff.

How to associate the file with an installed software?

If you want to associate a file with a new program (e.g. my-file.EPUB) you have two ways to do it. The first and the easiest one is to right-click on the selected EPUB file. From the drop-down menu select "Choose default program", then click "Browse" and find the desired program. The whole operation must be confirmed by clicking OK. The second and more difficult to do is associate the EPUB file extension to the corresponding software in the Windows Registry.

Is there one way to open unknown files?

Many files contain only simple text data. It is possible that while opening unknown files (e.g. EPUB) with a simple text editor like Windows Notepad will allow us to see some of the data encoded in the file. This method allows you to preview the contents of many files, but probably not in such a structure as a program dedicated to support them.
