What is a TEXTCLIPPING file?

Files with the .TEXTCLIPPING extension contain formatted text created using the “drag and drop” method in Mac OS X.

The files can be created by dragging and dropping a selected piece of text onto the desktop; the text retains the formatting, font styles, tables, numeration, and punctuation. The file name is created using the first couple of characters of the text. The text can be viewed by double-clicking its icon. The action can also be somewhat reversed by dragging the text into a text file – this way, the contents of a TEXTCLIPPING file can be easily inserted into a full document. This method is used as an alternative to the “copy-paste” method, usually when searching for information online or in other files.

How to associate the file with an installed software?

If you want to associate a file with a new program (e.g. my-file.TEXTCLIPPING) you have two ways to do it. The first and the easiest one is to right-click on the selected TEXTCLIPPING file. From the drop-down menu select "Choose default program", then click "Browse" and find the desired program. The whole operation must be confirmed by clicking OK. Is there one way to open unknown files?

Many files contain only simple text data. It is possible that while opening unknown files (e.g. TEXTCLIPPING) with a simple text editor like Windows Notepad will allow us to see some of the data encoded in the file. This method allows you to preview the contents of many files, but probably not in such a structure as a program dedicated to support them.
