What is a IDML file?
Files with the .IDML extension contain project data created by the Adobe InDesign software, versions CS4 and newer, saved in using an XML file hierarchy and catalogs packed in a ZIP format. The main catalog contains a file called designmap.xml, which defines the properties and layout of the entire document, while the individual sub-catalogs define document elements, such as colors, fonts, and paragraph styles in the Resources catalog, the document spread view in the Spread or MasterSpread catalog, the text contents in the Stories catalog, the elements and settings such as tags and mapping in the XML catalog, and files in the META-INF catalog, which also includes UCF packs.
The InDesign software, to which IDML files are unique, is made for professional webpage layout design. The IMDL format is a replacement for the older, more complicated INX format – it is also more universal, and is supported by other programs.

If you cannot open the IDML file on your computer - there may be several reasons. The first and most important reason (the most common) is the lack of a suitable software that supports IDML among those that are installed on your device.

How to associate the file with an installed software?
If you want to associate a file with a new program (e.g. my-file.IDML) you have two ways to do it. The first and the easiest one is to right-click on the selected IDML file. From the drop-down menu select "Choose default program", then click "Browse" and find the desired program. The whole operation must be confirmed by clicking OK. The second and more difficult to do is associate the IDML file extension to the corresponding software in the Windows Registry.
Is there one way to open unknown files?
Many files contain only simple text data. It is possible that while opening unknown files (e.g. IDML) with a simple text editor like Windows Notepad will allow us to see some of the data encoded in the file. This method allows you to preview the contents of many files, but probably not in such a structure as a program dedicated to support them.
