What is a PART file?

The .PART extension refers to partially downloaded files from the internet. This type of file is usually created whenever a browser download is interrupted or paused. This gives the opportunity to the browser to read the file information and resume the download of the actual file in future.

Sometimes, this extension is also given by default from the older version of browsers to the ongoing downloads. If the file being downloaded has readable format text, they can be opened with simple text editors to partially reveal the contents of the file. It is important to note that the software that initiated the download is only able to complete it and give the file its original extension instead of the .PART file extension.

More information about PART file

PART file extension is used by partially downloaded (stopped or in progress) files from the internet. PART files can be created by various programs, but typically they are generated by Mozilla Firefox download manager. PART files can store various types of data, depending on the source file.

File downloading process

PART file is created each time a download process has been initiated by the download manager. PART extension is used until downloading has finished and the file has been downloaded completely. When that happens, the PART extension is removed and the file is given its original extension. Paused or stopped downloading process can usually be resumed if needed.

Recovering PART of the data

Sometimes PART of the information can be recovered from partially downloaded PART file, for example, a text file or an audio/video file, by changing the extension into original one or by using dedicated software.

How to open PART files

If you cannot open the PART file on your computer - there may be several reasons. The first and most important reason (the most common) is the lack of a suitable software that supports PART among those that are installed on your device.

A very simple way to solve this problem is to find and download the appropriate application. The first part of the task has already been done – the software supporting the PART file can be found in the table. Now just download and install the appropriate application.

Possible problems with the PART format files

The inability to open and operate the PART file does not necessarily mean that you do not have an appropriate software installed on your computer. There may be other problems that also block our ability to operate the Partial Download Format file. Below is a list of possible problems.

  • Corruption of a PART file which is being opened
  • Incorrect links to the PART file in registry entries.
  • Accidental deletion of the description of the PART from the Windows registry
  • Incomplete installation of an application that supports the PART format
  • The PART file which is being opened is infected with an undesirable malware.
  • The computer does not have enough hardware resources to cope with the opening of the PART file.
  • Drivers of equipment used by the computer to open a PART file are out of date.

If you are sure that all of these reasons do not exist in your case (or have already been eliminated), the PART file should operate with your programs without any problem. If the problem with the PART file has not been solved, it may be due to the fact that in this case there is also another rare problem with the PART file. In this case, the only you can do is to ask for assistance of a professional staff.

How to associate the file with an installed software?

If you want to associate a file with a new program (e.g. my-file.PART) you have two ways to do it. The first and the easiest one is to right-click on the selected PART file. From the drop-down menu select "Choose default program", then click "Browse" and find the desired program. The whole operation must be confirmed by clicking OK. The second and more difficult to do is associate the PART file extension to the corresponding software in the Windows Registry.

Is there one way to open unknown files?

Many files contain only simple text data. It is possible that while opening unknown files (e.g. PART) with a simple text editor like Windows Notepad will allow us to see some of the data encoded in the file. This method allows you to preview the contents of many files, but probably not in such a structure as a program dedicated to support them.
