What is a XML file?

Files with the .XML extension contain text data in the XML language, short for Extensible Markup Language. XML uses markers called tags for defining objects and their attributes. It can be treated as a text-based database. XML files are similar to HTML files – the tags used in XML are, however, custom, and are used for defining various types of objects and properties. They are a universal format for storing and transferring data between programs and on the Internet. Thanks to the fact that they are text documents, they can be created and edited even using a simple text editor.

The XML format was created to replace HTML, but its use has become very widely used.

More information about XML file

XML extension is used by XML (Extensible Markup Language) data files, which are in turn used as generic information storing and exchange format supported by various software programs on the internet. XML files stores various types of data in text format using XML standard.

XML as the successor to HTML format

Originally XML was designed as the successor to HTML, but XML prove itself to be versatile and robust, and HTML is still popular and widely used. XML uses nonstandard markup for data exchange. XML and HTML use very similar formatting scheme, but XML is more rigorous when validating expressions and tags, for example, tags must be properly closed and are case-sensitive, whereas HTML is more lenient in this regard.

Popularity and simplicity of XML format

Data stored in XML files is machine- and human-readable. XML format is a simplified subset of SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language) standard. XML standard quickly gained popularity among web users and today is considered standard format in many applications; XML syntax is commonly used a base for other document formats.

How to open XML files

If you cannot open the XML file on your computer - there may be several reasons. The first and most important reason (the most common) is the lack of a suitable software that supports XML among those that are installed on your device.

A very simple way to solve this problem is to find and download the appropriate application. The first part of the task has already been done – the software supporting the XML file can be found in the table. Now just download and install the appropriate application.

Possible problems with the XML format files

The inability to open and operate the XML file does not necessarily mean that you do not have an appropriate software installed on your computer. There may be other problems that also block our ability to operate the XML Document Format file. Below is a list of possible problems.

  • Corruption of a XML file which is being opened
  • Incorrect links to the XML file in registry entries.
  • Accidental deletion of the description of the XML from the Windows registry
  • Incomplete installation of an application that supports the XML format
  • The XML file which is being opened is infected with an undesirable malware.
  • The computer does not have enough hardware resources to cope with the opening of the XML file.
  • Drivers of equipment used by the computer to open a XML file are out of date.

If you are sure that all of these reasons do not exist in your case (or have already been eliminated), the XML file should operate with your programs without any problem. If the problem with the XML file has not been solved, it may be due to the fact that in this case there is also another rare problem with the XML file. In this case, the only you can do is to ask for assistance of a professional staff.

How to associate the file with an installed software?

If you want to associate a file with a new program (e.g. my-file.XML) you have two ways to do it. The first and the easiest one is to right-click on the selected XML file. From the drop-down menu select "Choose default program", then click "Browse" and find the desired program. The whole operation must be confirmed by clicking OK. The second and more difficult to do is associate the XML file extension to the corresponding software in the Windows Registry.

Is there one way to open unknown files?

Many files contain only simple text data. It is possible that while opening unknown files (e.g. XML) with a simple text editor like Windows Notepad will allow us to see some of the data encoded in the file. This method allows you to preview the contents of many files, but probably not in such a structure as a program dedicated to support them.
